BEAM Neon is an experimental variable colour font system that explores the aesthetic and functional potential of COLR v1 technology. The project evolved from sketches of a rounded sans serif into a fully coded, parametric variable font using the COLR table, with regular bezier outlines as fallbacks. Its tightly spaced, simply constructed glyphs evoking CNC-machined cuttings, but also feature a tapering algorithm that reduces stroke weight at specific points, giving the typeface a unique flaire. Influenced by the aesthetics of Computational Crafts, especially by work of figures like Vera van der Seyp and Zach Liebermann, BEAM Neon also carries on the tradition of display typefaces that pretend to be three-dimensional, recalling designs such as Excoffon’s beautiful Calypso.

Beam Neon is a variable COLR v.1 Typeface. This means that you can do a whole lot of things with it when using it online, like animating the way the colors change or even the colors themselves. But you also have to watch out on what browsers this font is compatible and where not. Make sure to check that the environment you want to use Beam Neon in supports COLR v.1.
