About Us
Beam Type was started in 2024 by Cecilia Del Castillo and Felix Bamforth, in a joint effort to set up a plattform on which to publish their own type designs and those of friends and collaborators. Sharing a common interest for the more ornamental side of things, Beam Type became the ideal place to combine a deep passion for analog, calligraphic drawing with engineering know-how, to explore how exisiting design tropes can be revamped in a aesthetic and functional cloth.
Cecilia del Castillo is a Mexican type designer and calligrapher whose work is rooted in cultural heritage and craftsmanship, exploring the intersections of calligraphy and type design. She holds a Master’s degree from TypeMedia at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (KABK), as well as diplomas with Distinction from TypeParis in France and Tipo G in Barcelona. Over the past several years she has lived and worked independently in Barcelona, developing typefaces and calligraphic projects that reflect her passion for letterforms. In 2023 she was named one of the TDC Ascenders by the Type Directors Club in New York, a recognition of her contribution to contemporary type design.
Felix is a German Scot who grew up in France and began his journey with letters through graffiti before moving into design and later type. His practice combines a strong foundation in drawing with a growing expertise in creative coding, shaped by influences from experimental studios and mentors such as Erik Spiekermann, Ulrike Rausch, and the team at SuperType. He went on to complete his Master’s degree at TypeMedia in The Hague, where he deepened his skills in both type design and programming alongside a diverse group of peers. Since then he has been working professionally as a Font Engineer at Alphabet Type in Berlin, while developing his own independent projects and a collaborative design practice with Cecilia.
